Paul Making pots

Welcome to the gallery !

I thoroughly enjoy making these pots for people to use. There is a type of collaboration between the maker and the user that occurs with functional pottery that is not possible in many other forms of art. I'm always thinking about how my work can enhance the daily lives of the people who like to use it.

If you are interested in ordering make a note of the glaze color, pattern, and form. Then refer to the Ordering page for proper nomenclature. Keep in mind that these pieces are individually handmade; so sizes, shapes and colors will vary. Looking around the gallery should give you a good idea of the range you can expect. If you don't see what you want, check out the custom order info located here to see if we can collaborate. All of the prices listed are for retail customers and all retail orders include FREE SHIPPING and HANDLING! Wholesale orders are welcome and terms are available for legitimate buyers.

Mugs

Mugs are one of my favorite pots to make. It is the piece I usually start with when I begin a new series. These mugs are great to hold with a warm beverage and they come in two sizes; "wide" which is about 10 ounces and "Slim" at about 8 ounces. They both sell for $35 and are a great place to start a collection.

Pints

I've always called these cups tumblers, until I realized that the larger ones held about 16 ounces. Now I call them Pints and Half Pints. Its a classic shape that's great to have around in both sizes. Pints are $35 and Half Pints are $25.

Pitchers

My Pitchers are inspired by Mediterranean and Early English forms, and they work as well decoratively as they do filled with iced tea. Small Pitchers hold 20 to 24 ounces and sell for $55 and the Large Pitchers hold 60 to 70 ounces and sell for $75. The Paddled Pitchers are more complicated to construct as a result the Large are $95 and the small are $75.

Teapots

I have recently become an avid drinker of loose leaf tea, and it is driving innovation in my teapots. Following the Chinese YiXing tradition these pots are not glazed inside allowing the flavor of the tea to develop in the pot over time. I make many different types of tea pots but the standard ones are the Straight sided and the Rounded which come in a large 35 ounce size, for $95; and a small 18 ounce size, for $75. The Paddled teapots are, once again, more complex and sell for $125 for the large and $95 for the small. Sets can be created by adding $20 for each cup.

Stacking Sets

Stacking sets are a great way to play with simple forms. Stacking enhances the work aesthetically while still having them available for everyday use. The prices of these pieces vary depending upon the size and quantity of stacked shapes, but all the above examples are available through standard ordering.

Bowls

It seems to me that bowls are a powerful metaphor; the graceful curve of the dome of the sky right there in your hand at breakfast time. It is impossible for me to quantify the bowl shapes I make or, indeed the ones I want to make. Generally, they come Strait, Rounded, and Altered; in sizes and prices ranging from a small 4 to 5 inch bowl for $30, to a medium 6 to 8 inch for $45, and a large 9 to 12 inch for $75. Larger bowls are sold as serving dishes and ones with more specific sizes and shapes are possible with custom ordering.

Plates

I've always considered a plate to be the canvas of the pottery world. It's nearly flat surface provides a great place for exploring pattern and design. The square plates are hand built from slabs of clay and are offered in two sizes only; large, for $65 and small for $45. Round plates are easier to make in many different sizes due to the flexibility of the potter's wheel. They come in a small 5 inch plate for $20, a medium 8 inch plate for $35, and a large 11 to 12 inch plate for $55.

Serving Dishes

These pots are really about serving and displaying food. A large serving dish implies an abundance of food and a willingness to share it, which is traditionally a powerful statement. The low round serving dish is really just a shorter straight bowl and comes in two sizes; small 9 inch for $55 and a large 13 inch for $85. A stacking set of a Medium bowl with a large serving dish would be $130, and the large 17 inch oval slab built platters are $95.
